Shopify analytics that tells you which post drove the sale

Last updated: May 19, 2026

Short version: Shopify's built-in analytics dashboard is fine for revenue numbers. It can't tell you that the Instagram reel you posted Tuesday morning drove 47 visits and 2 sales. Small Business Analytics scans your Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn posts every morning and connects each one to the traffic spike (and order spike) it caused. Pair SBA with Shopify Analytics and you have the full picture: what's selling from Shopify, why it's selling from SBA.

Why default Shopify analytics aren't enough

Shopify's built-in analytics dashboard does revenue and order data well. Where it falls short for small store owners:

Why SBA is the right pick for Shopify owners

How to install SBA on Shopify (2 minutes)

Step 1 — Sign up and copy your snippet

Start your free trial at app.smallbusinessanalytics.io. On the setup screen, you'll see a single line of code with your unique tenant ID. Copy it.

Step 2 — Open your Shopify theme code

In your Shopify admin (yourstore.myshopify.com/admin), click Online Store in the left sidebar, then Themes. Your active theme is at the top — click the ••• menu next to it and pick Edit code.

Step 3 — Open theme.liquid

In the file list on the left, look under the Layout folder near the top and click theme.liquid.

Step 4 — Find the </head> tag

In the code editor, press Ctrl+F (Windows) or Cmd+F (Mac) and search for </head>. The editor will jump to the line.

Step 5 — Paste SBA's snippet above </head>

Click on the line just above the </head> tag and paste the snippet you copied. It looks like:

<script src="https://app.smallbusinessanalytics.io/tracker.js?tid=YOUR_ID" async></script>

Step 6 — Save

Click Save in the top right corner. Shopify takes effect immediately — no publish step needed.

Step 7 — Verify

Go back to SBA's setup screen and click Run a test visit. We'll visit your store, confirm the tracker is installed, and seed your dashboard with a sample session. If something's off, Alfred walks you through fixing it.

Stuck? The SBA onboarding screen has Alfred (our AI assistant) on the right side. Ask him anything — he knows the quirks of every major theme and walks you through it in plain English.

FAQ

Shopify-specific questions

Will SBA conflict with Shopify's built-in analytics?
No. Shopify Analytics, Google Analytics, and SBA are independent. Many stores run all three.
Does SBA work on Shopify free plan stores?
Yes. theme.liquid editing is available on every Shopify plan with a full storefront — Shopify Lite, Basic, Shopify, Advanced. The legacy Starter/Linkpop product is the only exception (it doesn't have a real storefront).
Does SBA track purchases or revenue?
No — that's Shopify's job. SBA tracks the visitor journey (where they came from, what they looked at, time on site). Together they answer "what got bought" + "what drove the buyer to the page."
Do I need a cookie banner?
SBA itself uses no cookies. If you're running Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or Klaviyo with cookies, you'll still need a banner for those — removing them doesn't break SBA.
Does SBA slow down my store?
The tracker script is <3KB and loads async — it doesn't block page render. Lighthouse / PageSpeed scores stay essentially unchanged.
What if I switch Shopify themes?
You'll need to re-paste the snippet into the new theme's theme.liquid. Takes 30 seconds. Your dashboard data carries over — only the tracker location changes.
